For many years, the Department of Agricultural and Consumer Economics has provided students with access to out-of-classroom experiences that give them an opportunity to observe first-hand the inner workings of business and government while developing important communication and leadership skills. The department has offered field trips, domestic study tours, and trips to international venues. Today, such experiences are vital to students. The experiences give them points in the plus column when they’re interviewing. Agribusiness is worldwide and their learning needs to be, too.
Several other areas of growth in the department that require sustained funding are a new financial planning program, rural health, and consumer economics. Programs such as the Office for Futures and Options Research, Farm Income Tax School, and farmdoc are examples of programs already in place.
Application of knowledge acquired in the classroom, to problem solving in the real world of industry and government, allows students to integrate knowledge, communication skills, and creative ideas in the environment of the business world and political realm at home and abroad.
The Illinois Land Economics Program would allow the college to expand its role in formulating policy and advising farmers and land owners, agribusinesses, and community leaders.
